Paul Cezanne said, “I could paint for a hundred years, a thousand years, and still feel as I know nothing.” I experienced that sentiment when I wrapped up this plein air session. I was totally excited about this scene and had such high hopes. This place is such a neat setting. I thought the yellow swing in the shadows was the perfect subject. However, what I pictured in my mind and what appeared on the canvas did not agree. I’ve pondered my study afterwards. What did I do wrong? What should I have done? What can I learn from this? My values are totally off, and I’m not fond of background treatment. I’ve not given up on this; I’ve just got to rethink the basic composition and values. Tomorrow is another day to paint.
