To visit Thurmond, WV is to visit the least populated municipality in West Virginia and a relic of a booming coal industry. Now on the National Register of Historic Places, the ghosts of a by-gone era can be sensed at every turn. At its peak, Thurmond was prosperous with a number of businesses and facilities for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. Truly interesting and strangely mournful, the abandoned buildings are reminders of the capricious winds of fate and fleeting fortunes of men.
This structure I tried to paint has become the icon of Thurmond, WV and served in loading coal (I think). Somebody who knows more than I will have to enlighten me as to it’s name and function. If at all possible, I will return to paint in Thurmond once more.
