When Justice John Marshall visited the area of Gauley Mountain in 1812, little did he know it would one day be the home of Hawk's Nest State Park, 370 acres in Fayette County near Ansted, WV. Stonework was laid in 1935, and one of West Virginia's most notable sightseeing destination began its journey to completion. Derived from the many fish hawks which inhabited the massive cliffs, the name Hawk's Nest was appropriate for the future park which would be located on the cliffs that rise 585 feet above the New River. Plein air painting there was a treat for me, one which I hope to repeat soon.
