Henri Matisse is quoted as saying, "There are always flowers for those who want to see them." I interpret that remark to have multiple meanings. The most important meaning to me is that the attitude or perspective one has toward his/her life situation plays a determining role in actual experience. Seeing the beauty in this world requires we deliberately, actively look for it. So often, the beauty (flowers) in this life is ours if we choose to see it. One of the many benefits of painting is that the artist is forced to seek for the beauty, the sublime in the ordinary, mundane trappings of living. This intimate view of zinnias is a reminder that beauty in its many forms is often right at the end of my nose.
