This viewer is looking toward Cross Lanes Drive in this painting of 40th Street of Nitro from the front lawn of Jean Nelson. In the foreground is a small, wooden bridge that spans a branch. The challenge of this composition was capturing the sense of distance and expanse of the slightly inclined lawn. Warm colors such as the yellow green of summer grow cooler and lighter with distance; thus, the green of our WV mountains, forests, and even grass takes on ever-changing shades of cool blue when receding in the distance. In looking at this photo, I've decided to add the power line and tree limbs in the distant trees. Many thanks to Jean Nelson for the loan of her lawn on this lovely morning.
