The history of art documents the wisdom of using the work of the masters as examples, copying if you will. Attaching oneself to a "master" in an apprentice relationship was a common practice. Although this practice is not a legal arrangement today, it does take place on informal levels. I study the work of artists I admire frequently and unabashedly attempt the way they paint. There is nothing illegal about it; it's not cheating. I am attempting to uncover the technique used, and always give credit. The inspiration for this piece was the work of Yuri Nokolaev, a contemporary artist, whose work I find stunning.
