I'm fairly new at trying to paint portraits. I try to think of them as landscapes, which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. This is a closeup of one upon which I'm currently working.

Studios I have Known…

I remember reading an article in an art magazine years ago that highlighted the working studios of successful contemporary artists. My attention was piqued when I noticed a section that presented the studio of one of my favorite artists. Located in the California mountains, the cathedral ceiling studio was complete with glass frontage that opened to a spectacular mountain vista. Oriental rugs covered a plush sitting area with leather sofa (no doubt genuine)and matching chairs. I suppose this sitting area was for clients, for the artist painted too much to do much sitting. Supplies were neatly arranged on polished wood shelving. Monumental canvas, frames, and works in progress were neatly arranged in artistic fashion. Staying Creative

I like to think of creativity as energy, a force that ebbs and flows. My realization of this dynamic was slow in coming. As I started painting with regularity, I took notice that a period of intense output would be followed by a lax period, a slump. These stagnant spells, would often be accompanied by fatigue, depression, a sense of worthlessness, and lack of drive. I would be convinced I would never produce anything worthwhile again. I obviously had forgotten how to paint, didn’t want to paint. I wasn’t in the mood. I might as well box up my paints and call it quits. Then…the cloud would lift, and all was well. I felt like painting again! Recognizing this repeating pattern after long last was liberating for me. The pressure to overcome the slump is not as intense now, for I know it will pass. Art with Ms. Daisy

It was my seventh grade year, and Ms. Daisy Denny was hired to teach art on Wednesday during seventh period at the school I attended. I’m sure her presence was by means of a grant, for the small county high school had few frills, certainly not a serious art department. My instruction began with being told to rummage through a box of magazine clippings, cards, calendars, and old photos containing an assortment of pictures. After chosing one to my liking, I was handed some chalk and told to draw the picture before me. That was the extent of my instruction. Mrs. Denny bragged on my masterpiece, and I believed her. I was hooked. Every Wednesday during seventh period, my seventh grade world fell away and I was introduced to a new realm—that of art.
