Covered Bridge #2 Staats’ Mill Open Air Jackson County

Staats Mill Covered Bridge in Jackson County, like Milton Covered Bridge in Cabell County, has known multiple lives. Originally known as Tug Fork Covered Bridge, it crossed Tug Fork on Big Mill Creek. Its namesake was Enoch Staat whose family owned a mill and store and played an influential role in the development of Jackson County. Original cost of the bridge was $1788.35, and construction was by local craftspeople. In 1983, the bridge was moved to the FHA-FFA State Camp at Cedar Lakes three miles from original site. In excellent condition, the bridge is open to pedestrian traffic only. While painting, I witnessed a steady stream of campers, picnickers, and sightseers. Rest assured, the bridge is enjoyed by many, including me.
