The Freezer 11x14

My childhood memories are full of joyful scenes, one of which involves a yard full of relatives and a five-gallon ice cream freezer. The freezer was old then and was a hand-cranked affair, which required time, seemingly hours, for the cream to set. After filling the cylinder with the ice cream choice of the day, the cylinder was locked into place and packed with ice and salt. Blankets would be placed over the freezer to keep the ice from melting quickly. Adults would take turns turning the handle, and little kids would sit on top of the freezer...not sure why that was a  thrill, but I remember being elated when it my turn. There is no doubt there has never been an ice cream that tasted any better.
