Open Air Putnam County, WV...Poca

I’m setting a goal, and in an effort to hold myself to it, I’m making it a matter of public record. The goal is this:  during the winter months, I will plein air paint one day a week, rain, sleet, or snow. Doing so will force me to broaden my use of color. The winter hues are so very different from summer and fall colors, and I simply need to practice capturing them on canvas. Maintaining a weekly routine will force me out of my comfortable studio into the elements. My goal is not to come home with a masterpiece, not even a finished painting, but rather an attempt to capture color notes. This Friday was the beginning of my self-imposed discipline. Although, it wasn’t cold, the day was cloudy and trees were bare, a typical gray day. I worked on small canvas, a piece of canvas paper divided into two 5x7 areas. I was happier with the first one. The second was pretty lame, but that’s OK. I’m giving myself permission to fail. The idea is improvement over time.
