Open Air Babcock State Park... Fayette County, WV...Glade Creek Grist Mill

Sometimes things just come full circle. After being introduced to oil painting as a 7th grader, I unconsciously began to take notice of images that would be fun to paint. I remember hungrily looking through magazines, postcards, books, anything that contained images that I could copy. A distinct memory I have is looking at a discarded pictorial calendar that involved scenic views. An image that caught my eye was of an old mill in a glorious autumn setting that I thought was simply magical. The caption identified the mill as a popular spot for photographers. It’s location was in West Virginia, which may as well have been on another planet as far as I was concerned. Little did I know that someday I would stand as a plein air artist and paint that very mill that tugged at my soul as a junior high student. I am somewhat weepy as I paint today, full of gratitude and memories. Yeah...things do have a way of coming full circle.
