The Preliminary Plan

Dario Fo said, “While drawing I discover what I want to say.” This comment sums up the reason behind my little color studies on kraft paper. These replicas of possible future paintings help me to “think through” composition, color notes, and dimensions of larger work. Sometimes I opt NOT to use the image after deciding I don’t like it like I imagined. Better to decide with a small version than halfway through a larger one. In the kraft paper study, I decide what changes need to be made. Here for instance, I’ve decided to shift the arrangement down lower and to the right and darken immediately in front of pitcher. Now, I have a plan, not that I have to stick to it, but it always helps to have a goal in mind. Aim at nothing and you’ll hit it every time. I try to take aim in my preliminary color study.
