Open Air Kanawha County

If the Eugene A.Carter Memorial Bridge was a person, he/she would no doubt display symptoms of schizophrenia. This  may be the one bridge in our country with the most names. Known by Fort Hill Bridge, Fort Hill Interchange Bridge, Oakwood Bridge, Oakwood Road Interchange, and lastly the Eugene A. Carter Memorial Bridge which was so deemed in 1975, it has a confusing history.  If you are like me, and had not the foggiest notion as to the identity of Mr. Carter, you will be interested to know he was born in Fayette  County in 1909 and was a depression-era mover and shaker in the coal industry. I struggled painting the bridge because of the overwhelming detail. My goal was not to paint a detailed replica but capture an impression of the sunlight on the structure and a sense of its sheer size. It’s a whopper. This bridge not only has suffered an identity crisis but a bad reputation as well. Accidents on this bridge have resulted in its being mentioned on local and national news numerous times. Little wonder it gave me trouble.
