Open Air Putnam County

The group I paint with meets weekly at Ridenour Park, and while there I try to paint a plein air piece. To achieve variety, I attempt to decide on views that are different from the previous week.
That’s difficult because the natural inclination is to paint the lake and mountains which I’ve painted on more than one occasion. I wanted to paint something different today, so I went with the play of the light on trees behind the picnic shelter. I was drawn to the light dancing on the tree trunks and foliage. Jan Blencoe said painting outdoors was “sorting through a visual feast and re-creating the essential components of beauty and wonder.” She definitely knew what she was talking about with the “visual feast” part. Knowing what to include and exclude is so difficult when so much information is in view.
