Open Air Kanawha County...The Little Brick Church

The Little Brick Church is actually how this sweet little building is listed on the web page; however, it is also known as Virginia’s Chapel and William Tompkins Church. Built in 1853, near Cedar Grove, WV, the Little Brick Church is on Hwy 60, otherwise known as the Midland Trail, which has a history of its own. The church is on the US National Register of Historic Places and was originally built as a non-denominational church, but was used exclusively by the Methodist denomination at one point.  A bit of history worth noting, both the Confederacy and Union troops occupied this site during the Civil War. They liked it, too, and I can understand why. The grounds and adjoining graveyard are well tended and the church interior immaculate...such an interesting place to visit and definitely worth  a plein air visit. The view I chose to paint included a tree which I eliminated (artistic license) to avoid my building being halved. I like this place well enough to return...soon. What a great place to paint during  Memorial Day weekend.
