A Different Twist

Recently, I read the words of a fellow artist who said that if we (artists) weren’t working outside our comfort zone, we probably aren’t growing. I take that to mean, I should be willing to try different techniques, take different approaches, step beyond the usual. After watching an instructional video, I tried a different preliminary planning technique involving a paper sack. Because of the neutral tone of the common paper sack, it provides an inexpensive surface to paint a small, quick study of an image, perhaps a photo. Decisions can be made in regard to size of larger piece, values, main elements, and unnecessary details to eliminate on a small area without using costly supplies. I like results enough to get myself a sketchbook that contains kraft paper because common  paper sacks are not as common as they use to be. This was not a huge step beyond my comfort zone, but I felt like I was stretched just a tad, worth the effort. I think I’ll be trying this more often and see if it makes an improvement.
