The old house has been there as long as I can remember and has a sad, nostalgic appeal that bespeaks of a happier time when laughter and life filled the halls. Decline has slowly set in; however, one can see signs that this home would have one time been considered a "nice place." The home was built during a time when AC was non-existent, and people actually SAT on the porch because the outside was cooler than the inside. The preferred time for most "sittin' " was after the work was done during the week and Sunday afternoons, of course. This house has three porches, with three distinct personalities. The most inferior porch is a long affair that no doubt served utilitarian purposes. Close to the garden and the back of the house, it gave easy access to grounds and the work that awaited. The front porch, a more "formal" style faced the front and provided a view of the road. I can imagine guests were taken here to enjoy the shaded coolness while discussing the goings and comings of passers-by. The side-porch, the one depicted in this painting was the heart of the place. This place was where real conversations were held, those family talks. Beans were snapped and peas were shelled here. The finger work from the latest sewing project was finished on this spot. This was the happening place. I can almost see them in there.
