Open Air Kanawha County

On Cross Lanes Drive within walking distance of my home, there is a little blue house that caught my eye when I first began living here. In the early mornings, the sunlight lights up the side of the house, and I am drawn to the sweet place. Therefore, I made arrangements to paint there-got permission, prepared gear the night before, and got on site before the temperature got uncomfortable. When I paint outdoors, I don't necessarily attempt to walk away with a finished painting. If that happens, I am thrilled, but for the most part, I try to approach the session as a learning time. I try to work on shapes, values, and color and at least take home something that can be used in the studio if I don't walk away with a finished piece. The work is usually messy and often unfinished, but there is no substitute for painting on site. Occasionally however, the muses simply do not line up regardless how prepared I am  or how wonderful the subject. Nothing looks like I like I want. I am not happy. Today was just one of those days for me, but that's OK. Any day I paint outdoors is a good day, and I learn. This view of the house was in the early morning, and I see a lot that needs to be improved or corrected, but I think I will attempt a studio piece using this as a road map. Although there was a muse mix-up, I had a wonderful day.
