Sophia's Celebration 5x7

One zinnia, a six-inch clay pot, and a small bag of potting soil- that was the extent of her purchase. The day had been a lovely spring day, and I know what she felt--an irresistible urge to buy something solely because it was pretty, something with no utilitarian value other than the pure pleasure it provided in simply being. That is reason enough. I'm convinced that the human spirit longs for beauty and will shrivel into a parched, empty shell of existence apart from beauty's presence in music, literature, art (visual and performing), nature, and etc. Hans Christian Anderson said it well, "Just living is not enough. One must have sunshine, freedom, and a little flower."
