Painting on the Run..5x7 Value Study

Values...basic to all else. The term value refers to the degree of lightness and darkness of any color. Failure to understand the role of value in a painting is to miss out on a crucial segment of the painting process. Achieving a proper balance of values insures a painting that reads authentically. In order to understand and apply the power of values, many artists paint value studies, a painting that consists of
four to five value ranges of gray (usually ranging from black to light gray). If correct values can be established, a readable image exists, and the artist can translate those same values to the color. This 5x7 value study will be used to paint a color image translating these values. That image is forthcoming.
