Nitro, WV is a World War I boom town, and as the name implies, gunpowder was its #1 product. The history of this place is quite a story. Built by the Federal government, this town was home to 110,000 people of many nationalities who worked this stretch of land along the Kanawah River Valley and was a hub of wartime industry. However, during the post war years, the numbers have steadily declined and small city has had to adjust. Set against the mountains, the row houses provide good painting material of which I am anxious to capture on canvas. However, today was spent at Ridenour City Park, a lovely fishing lake, complete with picnic shelters and lovely, wooded walking trails. I fell in love while painting my first plein air WV piece. I am excited about getting to know Nitro and this park as time passes. ...such a nice day.
