Dennis Perrin is a contemporary artist whose work demonstrates a masterful capturing of lights and darks. In my eternal quest for improvement, I chose a portion of one of his recent studies. Set outside in sunlight, a table containing a collection of tableware and floral arrangement was loosely yet masterfully depicted. The items dazzled in lights and contrasting shadow. Wanting to improve my own ability in achieving that degree of mastery, I selected a portion of the image and focused on that facet of painting. Some have termed this "deep practice," purposely improving in one area. While painting this 4x5 miniature portion of Perrin's image, I tried to focus on "the how" of the technique. I tried to forget the items specifically, focusing on shapes of light values set against shapes of darks. What is seen is not a detailed rendering of table, flowers, etc. but shapes of light and dark values arranged in such a manner, giving an impression of items labeled as teapot, cup, and sunflowers. ...and such is the illusion of painting.
