Getting Up with the Chickens 11x14 $200.

Painted on 1.5 inch gallery wrap, this piece, newly finished after several weeks, is ready for release. The challenge was capturing the atmosphere of early morning when the sun's rays find their way across open land and disperse the darkened shades of pre-dawn. To "get up with the chickens" refers to getting an early start on the day during this time. I struggled with keeping values of the barn and shaded areas dark while focusing on lighter values in sunlit areas. I eliminated most of the barn which forces the viewer to focus on the chickens, the point of interest. The sunlight which strikes the barn literally "points" to the chickens. The task of the artist is to arrange the image in such a fashion as to draw the viewer's eye to the center of interest. I'm learning that accomplishing this requires planning, a lot of planning. It seldom, if ever, happens by accident.
