On the Streets Where We Live, Plein Air #2

From the corner of 2nd Avenue and 1st Street North, the view is one looking southward. The afternoon sun does a striking number on the courthouse, and I am struck with how different this street is now from how it looked in my childhood. John T. Green owned/operated a small (by small I mean maybe 20x20) grocery store that was located in what is now the city parking lot behind the offices of D. A. Jeff Willis. My memories of this little business are clear, for Mrs. Green was from Germany, and I was fascinated by her speaking. Anyone from "off" was exotic and exciting. There was a shoe repair shop across the street and later a barber shop. I hate to date myself, but I do have memories of Mr. Bolt, a ferrier, who worked behind Green's Grocery. Yeah, you could get your horses/mules shod while the Greens filled your grocery order. At that time, Ashland Tire was owned by Bill Saxon. In the coming years, the young upstart Perry Browning would assume proprietorship of that business which is still with us, although Perry is not. I felt his presence as I shared the same view he had for so many years. You are truly missed, Perry.
