Many mornings when walking, I loop through the city cemetery. It's a great place to walk and an even better place to reflect. I have some of my best thoughts while walking and especially here. I know I could go to the wellness center and do when the weather is disagreeable, but there is something about being outside that is better. When I walk, I'm forced to slow down and see things from a different perspective, things I never notice from a moving car. I feel like a part of life rather than an observer. I think, plan, dream, and occasionally a super brainstorm is born, all while walking the streets of Ashland. The cemetery with its rolling lawn surrounded by towering trees has a hushed quiet that commands attention. Today, I made my way early while the sun was in the east to paint this view, the one that I'm always drawn to. This is not my best work; I've done better, but this view always gets my attention. I consider this view a statement on the human condition, a composite of the levels from which we relate. In the distance is the courthouse, representing our public/civic dealings; next is the unloading dock in the rear of Piggly Wiggly. I would like to think this represents our social/family affairs. Our physical lives are sustained by this place. In the foreground is the cemetery , a reminder that there is so much more to being human than our public, civic, and social dealings.
