Value is the degree of lightness and darkness in a given hue. For instance, the color red can be a multitude of shades depending upon the value of that red. We are told if the values are correct, a subject can be painted any color and still be "readable," simply because of the correct values. Hence, values are extremely important, and that's why I'm making an effort these days to concentrate on them. I'm attempting to paint a value study of subjects before I paint them in color. This takes time and concentration, but hopefully, this extra effort with pay dividends in the quality of my work. This 5x7 value study is one that I have always liked. I liked it so much that I framed and displayed it. Despite the lack of color, the subject is obvious. Like a good black and white photo, it stands on its own merit.
