We would do ourselves a favor if we paid more attention to the habits of animals; they have a LOT to teach us. Indeed, Psalm 8 instructs us to "consider" the world around us, which includes animals of all stripes. Countless times, the scripture uses the concrete images of animal and plant life to drive home abstract concepts. "Look at them (animals) " we are told; "learn from them." Matthew 23:37 and Psalm 91:4 contain two lovely images that portray God as the believer's protector and comforter. The image of a mother hen hovering over her young is employed. How I need/want that image to stick in my head! God loves me so much that he longs to draw me close, to "cuddle me," if you please. What a blessed thought...
Today's selection was a large commission piece (38x38) that pictures a dominecker rooster and hens. This bunch provides concrete images that communicate an abstract truth: God is my protector and my nurturer.
